A Hidden Window Brightens This Kitchen’s New Look

The homeowners’ dream of an entirely new kitchen was realized with this remodel, incorporating an improved layout, fresh cabinetry, and the surprise reveal of a hidden window.

To begin this project with a clean slate, we took the kitchen down to bare walls. The most exciting reveal in the project came early on when we removed cabinets on an exterior wall to find a hidden window.

We opened the wall and installed a new window, doubling the natural light into the room and perfecting the location of a new eat-in bar under the window. We kept the feeling open with floating shelves for artwork. Accents of red punctuate this cheerful kitchen.

Before the remodel, a makeshift countertop provided a workspace but wasted storage space and cluttered the view. We solved the problem by relocating the sink under the window, benefitting the most-used workstation in the kitchen with natural light and a better view. Storage increased with spacious upper cabinets around the oven and lower cabinets running the countertop length. In addition, the space formerly taken up by the dishwasher and refrigerator provided room for a six-burner range. The Super White Quartzite countertops extend across two walls of cabinetry, tying in with the countertop of a new built-in cupboard on the opposite wall.

As seen from the dining and living rooms, the distinctive Wolf range elevates the kitchen’s visual impact, along with a decorative tile backsplash that catches the light, and tall white cabinets surrounding a stainless steel hood. We moved the fridge to an interior wall in a space that allowed for a larger counter-depth appliance. Hardwood floors connect the kitchen with the rest of the home, and new lighting fixtures, including under-cabinet task lighting, improve workspaces and help set the mood throughout the room.

An original built-in was replaced with an update that maintains the character of the space and further opens up the kitchen. The previous cupboard was constrained by a wall on the left-hand side which we removed, adding valuable counter space and improved storage.

The homeowner’s new showpiece kitchen is more convenient and much more fun to spend time in–an all-around bright addition to their home.
