Project Background

This complete home remodel aimed to increase the size and functionality of a 1920s Craftsman bungalow by adding a second-floor build-out and a two-story addition at the back. Every design decision was made with light and shadow in mind, incorporating design elements that honor the home’s 100-year-old style inside and out.

The Design

When you open up the walls of a home, Nate sees the unique possibilities as they arise. For this remodel, demo revealed the home’s original subfloor, made of old-growth wood, likely salvaged in the 1920s from a barn, judging by the faded red paint on one side. The planks were wide and in great condition, with lots of character. Nate incorporated the wood in various design elements throughout the home, including custom-built furniture.
